Whom do we serve?

The women who cross our threshold face a variety of challenges. We seek to give them the tools, confidence, and clothing they need to overcome the obstacles they face and improve their lives. These women may be

  • Victims of domestic violence
  • Veterans
  • Recovering from substance abuse
  • Recovering from a catastrophic illness
  • Formerly incarcerated
  • At-risk youth
  • Homeless in transition
  • Dislocated workers
  • Displaced homemakers
  • Recent graduates
  • Disabled
  • Emancipated minors
  • Economically disadvantaged

In 2007, we gave more than 1,300 women the tools they needed to face their challenges of poverty, single motherhood, domestic abuse, and lack of education with confidence, support, and the right wardrobe.

A Conversation with a Client

So who is Career Closet? And what do you do?

We are a nonprofit service organization for women. We were founded in 1992 on the belief that behind every successful woman is another woman who believes in her. What we’ve been doing for over fifteen years is empowering women like you to re-enter the workplace equipped with the right attire and the right attitude to make a great first impression, get the job you want, and improve your life.

So how does it work? How do I get started?

You’ll need to get referred by one of the many social service agencies we work with in the area. After setting up an appointment, you’ll come in to either our San Jose or Foster City locations for a one-on-one consultation with one of our volunteer staff members — a successful woman dedicated to helping you become successful as well. Like our volunteers, our shops are both welcoming and professional.

What will we talk about at my appointment?

The most important thing is hearing about your career goals and aspirations — and then coming up with a plan for a wardrobe and an image to help you achieve them. We’ll also talk about interview and business tips and etiquette.

Where do the clothes come in?

That’s the next step once we figure out what kind of job you’re aiming for: we go through Career Closet’s extensive wardrobe of business attire, and find an interview outfit and mix-and-match pieces for a week on the job, including shoes, new undergarments, and accessories as well. We’ll pick clothes together that are both appropriate for your industry, as well as flattering to you.

Where do our clothes come from?

Our clothing is donated by business women and stores in our community. Some clothing is new and others are gently worn, but in either case, you can expect to find beautiful consignment-quality clothing in our shops. When you leave Career Closet, you can count on looking and feeling ready for an exciting new stage in your life.
